“A Bunch Of God Damn Noise” -Dad

The Technical Academy is back!  Equipped with new ruby code and the Bohlen-Pierce scale, they have resurrected their 1990 improvisational proof of concept, “Do Thing”.  Here are 3 consecutive performances on the vintage Roland U-110 instruments.

VERSION 2

After receiving some constructive feedback, the cadets abandoned sax and trumpet in favor of vibes. Several hours of rehearsals improved their performance, resulting in these 3 more inspired recordings:

Reichish Phase

Two identical parts are played, one slightly faster than the other, in the style of Steve Reich’s early works. Sonic Pi’s “pretty bells” are tuned to the Bohlen-Pierce musical scale.

BP Prelude

This minimalist algorithmic piece is intended to be played before a Bohlen-Pierce concert or demonstration, to acclimate an audience to the general sound of BP pitches and harmonies.

It was generated using Java and the JMusic library.
